Since mid-March, our lives and businesses have faced unprecedented disruption due to the COVID-19 crisis. Businesses have shuttered their doors, families and individuals are staying home, and the uncertainty surrounding the economy is growing.
During a crisis, many businesses toss out their marketing budget, or at least slash it. However, keeping your customers informed and engaged is paramount. You will need to find new, creative ways to communicate during the coronavirus lockdown. NOYO Web Development has compiled a few Dos and Don’ts as you reassess your digital marketing plan to address the lockdowns.
DO: Pause any automated messages that don’t make sense during a pandemic.
Covid-19 dominates the global headlines for a just reason. Depending upon your industry, you may need to reevaluate your copy and content for sensitivity issues. For instance, if you are a cruise liner company, it may not be a good time to send out marketing for a sale on state rooms. Look at your existing messaging and determine if your ad placement is right for this environment and in this context. If it isn’t, adapt the message to meet current needs.
DON’T: Eliminate all of your paid advertising during this time.
As you reassess your digital marketing campaigns, don’t simply eliminate them all. Every crisis has opportunities. If you stop all of your paid advertising, you will be behind the eight ball when the economy reopens. Plus, people are online much more now. Businesses are still open, and your customers may be looking for your product through your website.
Rather than dropping every effort, look at your most productive campaigns. Tailor them to meet today’s needs and ensure relevancy. Many restaurants are offering discounted delivery and ecommerce retailers are extending discounts as well.
DO: Grow your presence through your own media.
If your business has been impacted by COVID-19, redirect some of your efforts to your own media, such as emails, blogs, and organic SEO. Do some new keyword research in your industry sector and use them in current content.
Take advantage of the fact that people are at home and online by delivering engaging content through email campaigns. If you don’t already have one, now is a great opportunity to create a robust content marketing plan.
DON’T: Ignore your social media because of the COVID-19 crisis.
While most of our news feeds are saturated with news about COVID-19, that doesn’t mean that you need to stop your own social posts. Get creative with communicating with your customers. Your brand has relevance during this time. As we practice social distancing, more individuals are turning to social media to stay connected. Use this to tastefully reach out.
DO: Include digital marketing in your crisis management plan.
COVID-19 is the crisis of the day, and it won’t be the last. Even global companies were unprepared for the impact coronavirus would have on normal, everyday life. If your business has a crisis management plan, consider adapting it in line with your digital marketing efforts as well. Now is a good time to reassess potential risks, what types of messages will need to be paused or reconfigured, who the owners of that content are within your company, and general response strategies.
DON’T: Be afraid to ask for help.
You need to still manage your company, so hiring a marketing professional or experienced team, even on a temporary basis, can help immensely. Depending on your industry, you likely have a lot to handle right now. Take one task off of your plate by sending your digital marketing efforts to a dedicated team.
