Should we predict the top trends in web design for 2020 when we are only six months into 2019? Absolutely! We already wrote about preparing your website to handle Black Friday and the holiday sales. Your objective should always be to stay ahead of the competition rather than chasing trends that are already losing steam.
1. Boxes as design elements: boxed design elements continue to grow in popularity as they grow more varied. Boxes offer multiple aesthetic purposes by highlighting specific content and adding links. Boxes are designed to be visual, so they can be any type of pop-up such as a picture or CTA.
In addition, designers use boxes for layering, which adds interest to a simple design. This trend comes from using card elements in a material design style, which are still useful. Boxed elements will play a large role in overall design trends in 2020.
2. Pop-out menus and hidden navigation: Originally, this design element made using mobile apps easier. Now, it has become a full-fledged design trend for any type of website. Hidden navigation together with pop-out menus create more space on the screen. It enables highlighting of specific navigational elements in addition to having key promotional purpose.
You will find this on many websites with some pretty creative design solutions. As more people use ready-made website templates with WordPress CMS (which we believe is the best around), you will find the trend in WordPress themes quite often. Having its roots in minimalism, this trend will be around for a while.
3. Multiple video elements: Video continues to grow in importance to web design. It can come a variety of forms. To benefit your website and traffic, either full-screen or embedded videos from social media give a boost to your business.
NOYO Web Design expects full-screen video placed in a header on the homepage to continue to trend. It is a “hero” video format that is the optimum in many situations. It may also include a content overlay such as a CTA or headline.
You can play with the video content to optimize its performance. You can try multiple videos playing across the site at different times to attract visitors and generate more interest. Videos are also a highly effective method of storytelling or showing how-to’s. Mixing and matching videos, CSS tricks, and animation all add to user engagement and encourage them to explore your site.
4. Text-based design. Text-based links have supplanted ghost buttons in navigation menus. Bold typography and massive headers are trending in website design. This makes it easier for a visitor to skim the contents of a homepage and get an understanding of the website at first sight.
The other side of the coin is just as relevant. Small typography also has its place in excellent web design. Small, sparse text for body content can be highly effective. Downsized text gives a feeling of space and allows the visitor’s eyes to wander over the page. It looks good when the text is kept at a minimum and does not contrast with large text blocks. Mix and match is always a useful rule for web design.
Yet, hand in hand with the above-mentioned trend walks another one – the small-sized typography. Some designers use small and sparse text for body content, others tend to use it for some header elements. If you do combine large and tiny typography well in your website design, chances are it will draw the needed attention to your resource.
