Our last post delved into blogging as a means to keep your website content fresh and relevant, which is something Google and other search engines seek out. Creating a great headline is crucial to capturing the attention of your potential customers. It needs to convey urgency and be unique. In addition, take these tips into consideration for writing a great headline:

  • Useful: Do you want to read useless information? No, of course not, and neither do your customers. Your articles should include information your customers can put to use depending on your particular industry sector, whether its construction, parenting, career building, or gourmet cooking.
  • Be specific: This relates to relevant content. Your information should be hyper-specific to keep your customers engaged. Of course, it could become too specific and develop into a niche when you want to expand your client base. You can add some more generalized headlines in between the specific ones to attract a growing audience.

Add Social Sharing for Blogging

You have made an investment of time to write great blog posts, or you may be investing money to pay a professional blogger. Either way, you want that investment shared as many time possible. Make sure you are using social sharing buttons that can be built right into your blog. Make it super easy to share, and don’t expect users to rely on browser shortcuts or having to log into their social media accounts.

You can try a variety of plugins for social sharing buttons such as Jetpack by Automattic. This plugin gives you a selection of powerful options from within one great site. It’s super simple. Install Jetpack, then navigate to the Jetpack settings. Enable sharing buttons and select the location. It supports multiple social media sites including the biggies: Facebook, Google+, and Twitter.

People love to feel like they belong to the “in crowd.” Opt for showing the count of social shares or the total quantity of social followers to increase your visitor’s likeliness to do the same. However, you may want to “hide” the feature for a while until your follower count is a little more impressive than just starting out.

Great blogging has many other elements, such as readability scales and grammar. The topic of readability is an entire post, and it depends upon the topic and audience. If you are writing about the latest developments in quantum mechanics and your audience is PhD level and above (and those types of blogs exist), complex sentences may be appropriate. If your topic is light such as cooking, you may want a higher readability score.
